interactive dance media

anfractuous is an interactive dance media artwork that invites viewers to activate the choreography through choice and play. It is a collaboration with Media Artist, Martin Jarmick, composer Paul Matthew Moore and dance artists Imana Gunawan, Natalie Fernandi, Sean O’Bryan and Majinn O’Neal. It is funded, in part, by a Mellon Creative Artist Fellowship grant, the Petersen Endowed Professorship fund, the Kreielsheimer Grant for Research Excellence in the Arts, and Cal State Northridge Cinema and Media Studies Department. Anfractuous goes to Australia!

In June 2024, Martin and Jennifer were invited to exhibit anfractuous at the the International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA2024) in Brisbane, Australia. ISEA is the leading electronic arts gathering of its kind spanning ten days, with 200 creative works (performances and exhibits) at galleries, museums and performance venues throughout the city, and three days of scholarly presentations. Our artwork existed on a giant multi-panel touch screen enabling viewers to play the screen or grab a QR code and play it on their devices. Travel was funded by the Jones Endowment for the Arts at the University of Washington, and Cal State Northridge. 

Similar to a game, the piece is experienced through a mobile device or computer. Video panels are arranged on the screen and display various angles, spaces and moving bodies and audiences search for visual and sonic relationships between the videos. Audiences engage multiple senses to author their own flow and order of the dance with each experience.
